A man started digging a BBQ pit in his backyard and got carried away. In 1949 the late Dr. Glen Havens of Kensington, California began enlarging the pit barbecue at his suburban home and, as one of his sons explained years later, “Dad started to dig and he kept going. He said it made him think…” With the assistance of his sons and some neighborhood children, by the time he was finished he had managed to dig some 700 feet of tunnels and caverns beneath the house. Dubbed “Havens’ Caves,” they were a popular neighborhood attraction in the 1950’s and ’60’s.
